I know, I know...it's December, and who thinks about composting in this weather? I guess my husband and I do, since we continue to produce compostible materials in our kitchen daily. It seems as if I fill a kitchen bin with scraps from our meals, with a little laundry drier fuzz thrown in for good measure, every single day. The thought of throwing it all into the trash is so unpleasant. And in Colorado you find yourself enjoying 50-60 degree days sprinkled in throughout the winter. So thinking about and even using our compost tumbler isn't so big a stretch. See, we love the idea of living “Green”, and doing our part to help Mother Earth. There are lots of ways that one can improve Mother's chances of surviving. Some methods are pretty tough to do. I'd love to have the money to put up a wind driven generator system, and maybe some solar panels. I'd like to buy one of those Smart cars, or an electric car to cut down on emissions. These would be in addition to my scooter and my bicycle that get me around. But we don't have the money right now. We have to choose a less expensive way for the time being. And so, one of the ways we do our part for Mother Earth is by reducing the amount of waste that goes to the landfill. We compost! But wait, not only do we reduce the trash put into the system, but we also reduce water consumption by not running the faucet with a garbage disposal unit. Instead of running our kitchen waste down the drain, we put it into our tumbling composter. Wait again! Reductions in waste and water consumption, AND we get 100% organic soil enhancer (ie. Fertilizer), no chemicals added, to boost the production of our flower and vegetable gardens. It really hasn't taken very long for our kitchen scraps to become good quality organic compost. We now have our tumbler full of scraps, and a mound of compost that is setting until Spring.
Of course, it wasn't always such a slick operation. When we first started composting, we weren't having a whole lot of luck. You might have tried and been frustrated with composting, too. It can be a bit tricky trying to get the right mix of ‘greens’ and ‘browns’ so that they will work together to break down into usable compost. Even the experienced composter can run into this problem now and again unless they've gone to a lot of effort planning and storing their materials. But if you use a packet of BiOWiSH™ Compost Boost you won’t be worried about your compost materials doing what it's supposed to any more. Within a day you’ll feel the heat coming off the compost tumber, bin or pile as the organisms work to break down the materials from your kitchen.
